Winter in Madison, Wisconsin offers far more than snowy streets and frozen lakes. From exploring fascinating museums to touring the iconic Wisconsin State Capitol building, there’s no shortage of indoor and outdoor activities to enjoy. The city also shines in winter with its great dining options, ranging from cozy cafés to standout restaurants. When the sun goes down, Madison comes alive with lots of nightlife, making it an exciting destination even in the coldest months. Madison is the perfect weekend getaway from Chicago to experience something new and exciting!

Where to Stay?
Part of having a successful visit to any city, is having a hotel that is in the perfect location. Best Western Premier Park Hotel is right in the heart of Madison which makes it the best overnight or weekend stay. Once you settle, everything is pretty much within walking distance: explore while getting those steps in! This hotel offers a cozy bar, restaurant, heated pool and some of the best views of the State Capitol building.
Where to Eat?
Food is probably one of the best ways to explore what a city has to offer. Luckily, Madison has endless options that make that experience one of a kind. Whether you are looking for something casual or something more upscale, you will not be disappointed!
Cento- Serves Italian options for brunch and dinner with a spin. We came here for brunch and loved everything we ate. Caponata Toast and Breakfast Pizza were fire! They also have a Boozy brunch option where you get more for your buck with a flat price for few food options and drinks.
Tornado Room Steakhouse- If you are looking for a delicious steak with supper-club vibe then this is THE spot. Everything from service to atmosphere and mouthwatering dining was incredible and we would go back in a heartbeat.
Garver Lounge- Located in Garver Feed Mill, their breakfast options are the perfect way to start your day. They offer brunch staples such as omelets, pancakes, sandwiches and more. Stop here before exploring the rest of this incredible space.
Merchant- American comfort food served in an upscale dining setting. Craft cocktails are also incredible, especially the Old Fashioned. During the holidays, it turns into Nightmare before Christmas pop up which is quite entertaining!
Where to Enjoy Nightlife?
Once the sun sets, Madison’s nightlife comes to life with many fun bar/lounge options. All of the recommendations below are close to one another, so you can opt for walking and staying safe while enjoying a night out.
Cardinal Bar- If you are looking to enjoy a salsa class along with delicious cocktails, then Cardinal Bar is the perfect stop. They host dance lessons followed by a DJ playing incredible music which makes the perfect date night or outing with friends.
Lucille- This three floor pizza restaurant has an amazing vintage and industrial-like vibe. They host lots of events on a weekly basis, so make sure to check out their website for more details. During holidays, they turn it into a holiday pop up with festive cocktails, which is so fun!
Oz by Oz- Loved our experience here, especially because of how unique their take on cocktails is. You can either order a drink based on your zodiac sign or go for something unique like a Guardians of the Margarita Galaxy, which I highly recommend. Really cool eclectic vibe with nice ambiance.
The Post- located on the first floor of the Premier Park Hotel, makes for the perfect night cap or to get your night started. There is also a restaurant if you’d like to grab some grub before heading out.
Where to Have Fun?
Madison has lots of things to do for any age and any sorts of activity you are looking for. Whether you are looking for something relaxing or wanting to be outdoors, there is plenty to pick from.
Kosa Spa- We have been to quite a few Spas, but Kosa is out of this world! This is not your typical spa: it is more than just getting a massage or a facial, but rather a holistic elevated spa experience. They offer Abhyanga treatments, steam and sauna retreat and more. You truly feel taken care of and feel all of your worries go away the second you step into this place.
Dane County Farmers’ Market- Madison is home to the largest producers-only farmers’ market that is year-round. You can find unique artisan food, handmade crafts and more. During warmer months it takes place outdoors around the entire Capitol Square, while right now you can visit it every Saturday at Garver Feed Mill.
Olbrich Gardens- While these gardens have tons to offer during summer months, their Bolz Conservatory is not to be missed to experience a tropical ambiance with lots of gorgeous plants, birds and even quails that just walk around as you explore.
Shopping- If you are looking for something to do in between your itinerary, hopping around shops on State Street is a perfect way to spend that time. You will find charming gift shops, diverse eateries, boutiques and a local cheese shop such as Fromagination that are all worth visiting. I highly recommend taking State Street all the way to the University Campus and seeing what catches your eye along the way.
Where to Explore History?
Visitors from all over the country are drawn to Madison's reach history and for the right reasons. There are lots of incredible museums and exhibits that will keep you occupied indoors on those cold days.
Chazen Museum- This museum impresses its audience with works from ancient to contemporary art. Whether you are a casual explorer or an art guru, you will find these spacious galleries super engaging and relaxing. It is located on the UW-Madison campus and is free to public.
Wisconsin State Capitol– One of the buildings that are truly worth seeing while in Madison. To see the rooms, you must attend a tour which occur daily and are free of charge. During the holiday, a huge Christmas Tree can be found in the middle of the building which is decorated with ornaments made by kids and families from all over the state.
Madison Museum of Contemporary Art- Exhibits here change regularly, so whatever you see now will not be the same in few months, which is quite unique! Located right downtown Madison, it makes the perfect stop when going out to explore what the city has to offer.
Frank Lloyd Wright Trail- As you explore Madison, don’t miss out on this self-guided route that celebrates one of the most famous architects in USA. The tour itself spans for over 200 miles across the state of Wisconsin, but you can still visit stops such as Monona Terrace and First Unitarian Society Meeting House while in Madison. Check out “Wright in Madison” for prizes and more history!

Madison is the perfect weekend getaway from Chicago! There is plenty to do even in the colder months. Hope you have the best time exploring!
